I have hosted Christmas Eve for six years. My in-laws arrive with a cooler of comments. This year my mother-in-law walked in, looked at the bird, and said, in front of my kids, 'Oh. We're doing sad turkey again.' My father-in-law laughed. My spouse said 'she's joking.'
I finished the meal. I smiled. After they left I texted the family thread: I am not hosting in December. You are welcome to host. I will bring pie.
They called me fragile. My spouse is sleeping in the guest room until I 'unsend the vibe.' I have not unsent it.
